Te Kupenga o Rongomai: Maidstone Community Sports Hub is the centrepiece of Maidstone Park’s overall redevelopment.
It features a grandstand, new shared clubrooms, multi-use spaces, and a publicly accessible ’greenroom’ including a gymnasium space with artificial turf flooring.
The name Te Kupenga o Rongomai was kindly gifted by Te Atiawa, Ngāti Toa and Ōrongomai Marae and translates to ‘The fishing net of Rongomai.’ symbolizing the hub’s purpose of uniting people.
Taking inspiration from the industrial context, the architecture of Te Kupenga o Rongomai reflects the history of the site through form and materiality. A highly collaborative approach was taken throughout the design process as we worked alongside Upper Hutt City Council and Maidstone Park Trust to bring this exciting project to life.
