This striking 18-story tower stands at the prominent junction of Lambton Quay and Hunter Street in Wellington, exemplifying modern commercial architecture. Designed by Stephenson & Turner, the building was developed as an investment property, strategically maximizing plot ratio, shape, and height allowances under the city ordinances at the time. Originally the head office for the Bank of New South Wales, it continues to serve as a key financial hub, with Westpac Bank remaining the primary tenant.
Situated on the steep hillside where Lambton Harbour once met The Terrace, the tower’s design ensures dual-level access for functionality and accessibility. To optimize daylight along Lambton Quay, the structure is set back significantly from its neighbours, with podium levels stepping back at the second and fifth floors. This approach enhances natural light penetration in one of Wellington CBD’s busiest commercial districts while maintaining alignment with the historic streetscape.
Architecturally, the tower’s vertical emphasis is defined by a series of closely spaced, elegant columns, drawing inspiration from the World Trade Center in New York. Once a dominant feature at the southern end of Lambton Quay, it now sits alongside another Stephenson & Turner landmark—the iconic AEO Centre.
As one of the Wellington’s oldest architectural firms, S&T has played a pivotal role in shaping the skyline and character of the capital, leaving a legacy that continues to define its urban landscape.
